Manchester
Oh, what a murky city!
Damp drizzle that early dawn:
My first walk up Market Street,
Yet I fitted like a glove.
As I strolled your wet roads:
The sky always overcast:
Only the odd ray of sunshine:
Blending in a vibrant pulse.
Tall smokey chimneys, redbrick mills:
Immortalised in Lowry's paintings.
Yellow sky, no stars at night:
Oh well, you can't have everything.
Then came the smokeless zone:
Cleaning up the dirty smog.
Better brighter bluer sphere
And still that gentle drizzle.
Years on, not recognisable:
After the bombing by the IRA.
Now egressed, emerged, energised:
Revamped city in full swing.
Like you, my lovely city:
I am broken beyond recognition.
So sadly I must leave you,
Manchester, love of my heart.
