Subject - GMPA's 'Appropriate Adult' Scheme seeks Volunteers

Posted : (Thursday 21st December 2006 ) By - Jane (Registered User)Volunteers from Manchester are needed for a pioneering scheme introduced by the Greater Manchester Police Authority (GMPA) just over a year ago. The 'Appropriate Adult' scheme, the first of its kind in the country, is a round the clock service run by volunteers aimed at supporting juveniles or vulnerable adults through custodial procedures. Volunteers attend within 1½ hours making the process much faster and reducing the time the detainee has to remain in custody. Their role is to look after the detained persons' welfare, explain police procedures, provide information about their rights and ensure that these are protected; and facilitate communication with police.

For further information on becoming a volunteer please contact the scheme co-ordinator, Lisa Hindle on 0161 793 3048 or email lisa.hindle@gmpa.gov.uk Further details can be found on the GMPA websitewww.gmpa.gov.uk
