Subject - New Manchester Women's Design Group

ReplyPosted : (Friday 2nd November 2007 ) By - Hannah Berry (Unregistered User) Since 1987, Women’s Design Service has been organising research and training with communities on the impact of regeneration and development projects on women.

With funding from the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE), it has now set up a regional Women's Desig Group (WDG)in Manchester. The aim is for the WDG to become expert advisors on how to ensure that women’s perspectives are not overlooked in the design of buildings and public space. This is important due to continuing male dominance among planners, architects and decision-makers.

The Manchester WDG is an independent voluntary association with a Management Committee. It is seeking other women who would enjoy learning about this important topic in a supportive, friendly environment.

Some members are planners, architects, park wardens, housing association employees etc., but most come out of personal interest. No experience needed!

Our knowledge of best practice will be created through action research, and training will centre on skills such as how to read plans and architectural drawings, conduct surveys, analyse data, devise presentations and feel confident in public speaking.

The WDG meets monthly (times and dates still flexible) in an accessible venue in the city centre.
