Description

SWAP is an independent voluntary sector organisation which assists migrant community members to settle into the borough of Wigan: our work focuses on refugees, asylum seekers and migrant workers from Eastern Europe. A company limited by guarantee, we are in the process of becoming a registered charity.

We are currently delivering integration support, health promotion and maternity support services to over 100 clients, and in the last 12 months we have worked with refugees and migrants from around 30 countries and speaking as many languages. Every day brings a different challenge: the pace is often fast and furious, and an ever-changing policy environment keeps us on our toes.

We are now looking to recruit a Chief Officer with enthusiasm, strong management and leadership skills and proven fundraising ability to plan and strategically develop SWAP’s work and expand our funding portfolio. You will need to be flexible and decisive, an excellent motivator and someone who thrives on a challenge. Our staff team is small, so a positive attitude to team work and to developing the potential of team members is crucial.

As Chief Officer you will be expected to contribute to both strategic and operational aspects of the organisation. Key challenges for the first 6 months are to secure future funding for SWAP and to work with the Board of Directors to develop a short- and medium-term strategy so that the Board and staff have a clear vision of where the organisation is heading and how it will get there.

You will also have overall responsibility for ensuring that service delivery meets the needs of clients and funders, for which you will need a sympathetic understanding of the implications of supporting vulnerable people. Previous experience of working with refugees and migrants would be advantageous but is not essential; a positive attitude towards the rights of refugees and migrant workers is a must.

This is a part-time job (22 hours), salary £26,835 pro rata, currently offered to the end of December 2008, with potential for increased hours and contract extension if ongoing funding is secured.

A job description and person specification can be obtained by emailing rebecca@swapwigan.org.
